CGC 10 Comic: How Rare a 10.0 Gem Mint Grade Is

Yes, but very rarely. CGC defines 10.0 Gem Mint as "the highest grade assigned"; the book must have no evidence of any manufacturing or handling defects. MyComicsCollection (July 2026) puts 10.0 at less than 0.1% of comics submitted, and says it requires white pages.

The numbers from older data are small:

• Pre-2000 books: slabdata.com's analysis of more than 3.2 million comics graded from 2000 to 2016 found only 256 different issues published between 1949 and 1999 that reached 10, for 547 slabs in total (January 2017).
• Golden Age: in September 2008 CGC reported that it had graded only one Golden Age comic a 10.0, a book from 1949.
• Oldest: slabdata names that book as Kolynos Presents the White Guard #1 (1949), followed by Thor #156 (September 1968), Snatch Comics #1 third printing (1969) and several Aurora Comic Scenes editions (1974).

Those figures mean almost every CGC 10 is a recent book.

CGC's own definitions for the top of its comic scale:

• 10.0 Gem Mint: no manufacturing or handling defects at all.
• 9.9 Mint: nearly indistinguishable from a 10.0 but with a very minor manufacturing defect, and no handling defects.
• 9.8 NM/M: nearly perfect, with negligible handling or manufacturing defects.
• 9.6 NM+: very well preserved, with several minor defects.
• 9.4 NM: very well preserved, with minor wear and small defects.

So the step from 9.9 to 10.0 is about printing and trimming, not care: a book can be handled perfectly and still miss 10.0 because of a flaw from the printer.

Only for trading cards, not comics. On June 20, 2023, CGC Cards announced that cards previously graded Gem Mint 9.5 are exactly equivalent to Gem Mint 10 on its new scale, added Pristine 10 above it, and dropped Perfect 10. CGC's comic scale has no 9.5 at the top: above 9.0 it goes 9.2, 9.4, 9.6, 9.8, 9.9 and 10.0.

Each is the top grade on its own company's scale, but they are two companies' opinions and buyers price them separately. On cards, CGC said its 2023 change was made because a Gem Mint 9.5 at one grader meaning the same as a Gem Mint 10 at another confused the hobby; since then CGC's Gem Mint 10 is meant to line up with the 10 used elsewhere. Record prices come from old keys in grades far below 10.0. From CGC's list of top sales (updated July 13, 2026):

Some price guides show a 10.0 value even for old books where no 10.0 copy is known. PriceCharting, for example, lists $85,034 for Superboy #68 (1958) in 10.0 (retrieved September 25, 2026), and states on its Detective Comics #1 page that a value for a grade without sales is an estimate based on other grades and the age of the comic. Treat a 10.0 figure as real only if you can find the sale behind it, and check the CGC census for how many 10.0 copies of that issue exist.

• Pick new, unread books. Nearly every 10.0 is a modern comic handled as little as possible.
• Look for printing flaws first. Off-center covers, cut-off trim, color spots and staple problems are manufacturing defects; any of them rules out 10.0 no matter how careful you have been.
• Expect 9.8. Budget the grading fee against the 9.8 value, not the 10.0 value; see CGC grading cost.
