Comic Book Value: How to Find What Your Comics Are Worth

Work through these in order. Skipping the first two is the most common reason people quote the wrong price.

• Read the indicia, not just the cover. The small print on the first page or inside cover gives the title, issue number, publisher and date. Reprints and facsimiles usually say so there. See identify printings and variants.
• Check whether it is a key issue. First appearances, origins and famous covers carry most of the value in any run. Our first appearances list gives the issue for 40 characters.
• Pin down the edition. Newsstand and direct editions, later printings and facsimiles of the same issue sell at different prices.
• Grade it honestly. Spine stress, corners, gloss, page color and staples decide the grade; our grading guide walks through each.
• Look up sold prices, not asking prices. PriceCharting says it monitors eBay comic sales, assigns each sale to an issue, discards junk listings and records the grade, then builds a value per grade from those sales.
• Decide whether grading pays. Compare the raw value with the graded value minus the fee; the numbers are on our CGC grading cost page.

Some are worth a lot, and many are worth little. The deciding factors are key status, age, how many copies survive and grade. Even famous issues from very large print runs stay cheap. PriceCharting values, retrieved September 25, 2026:

• Spawn #1 (1992): $10 at CGC 2.0, $65 at CGC 9.4
• The Amazing Spider-Man #361 (1992), first Carnage: $17 at CGC 2.0, $125 at CGC 9.4
• Avengers Annual #10 (1981), first Rogue: $33 at CGC 2.0, $200 at CGC 9.4
• The Incredible Hulk #181 (1974), first full Wolverine: $1,399 at CGC 2.0, $10,000 at CGC 9.4
• Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962), first Spider-Man: $22,000 at CGC 2.0, $584,365 at CGC 9.4

A common run issue with no key status usually sells for far less than any of these. Treat a key issue as the starting point for a valuation, not a guarantee of value.

The same issue can be worth several times more in high grade. Ratios below are CGC 9.4 value divided by CGC 2.0 value, computed from PriceCharting figures retrieved September 25, 2026:

• Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962): about 27 times ($22,000 to $584,365)
• The Incredible Hulk #181 (1974): about 7 times ($1,399 to $10,000)
• Spawn #1 (1992): about 6.5 times ($10 to $65)
• The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988): about 4.5 times ($162 to $725)
• The New Mutants #98 (1991): about 3.5 times ($104 to $365)

Above CGC 9.4 the jump can be much larger on modern books. PriceCharting's live page on September 25, 2026 listed The New Mutants #98 at $1,014 in CGC 9.8, almost three times its CGC 9.4 value. That is why a half-point of grade matters more on a 1990s book than on a worn 1940s one.

These are first-appearance keys with PriceCharting CGC values retrieved September 25, 2026. They show the range for each decade, not what an average book from that decade is worth.

• 1980s: The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988) $162 to $725; Avengers Annual #10 (1981) $33 to $200 (CGC 2.0 to 9.4)
• 1990s to 2010s: The Batman Adventures #12 (1993) $188 to $600; Ultimate Fallout #4 (2011) $152 to $390; Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (2014) $90 to $374 (CGC 2.0 to 9.4)

Each source answers a different question, and they disagree, so check more than one on any expensive book.

• PriceCharting: free values for ungraded and CGC-graded comics, built from eBay sales it matches to issues. It also has a collection tracker. Best for books that sell often.
• The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide: the long-running printed guide. Edition #55 came out February 25, 2026, about 1,000 pages, $34.95 softcover or $44.95 hardcover (Gemstone). Its publisher, Gemstone, also runs Overstreet Access, an online database with collection management and sales-price tracking behind membership levels.
• Auction records: for books worth thousands, the sale results reported by CGC and the auction houses (Heritage, ComicConnect, Goldin and others appear in CGC's record list) show what top copies actually made.

How far apart guides can be: for Action Comics #1, QualityComix listed GD 2.0 at $175,100, while PriceCharting's CGC 2.0 figure was $37,928; both were checked in September 2026. On rare books a guide figure may rest on very few sales, so read it with the sale dates.

Yes. ComicLens reads the title, issue number and cover from a photo and shows a reference price range for the copy it matches. Use it to find out quickly which book you are holding and roughly where it sits. Three limits apply:

• A photo cannot settle the grade. Pick the grade you actually see, and the range moves with it.
• Variant covers and later printings can look almost identical. Check the indicia before trusting a match on an expensive key.
• A reference range is not an appraisal or an offer. For a book worth thousands, check recent auction results and consider grading.

Match the selling route to what the book is worth.

• Common run issues: sell as a run or a lot to a local shop or collector. Grading fees would exceed their value; CGC's cheapest modern tier is $27 a book with a 25-book minimum.
• Mid-value keys (tens to a few hundred dollars): raw copies sell well on eBay, which is the sale data PriceCharting tracks. Photograph the cover, back, spine and indicia, and describe every defect.
• High-value keys: have the book graded first, because the slab records the grade and any restoration for the buyer. Then consider a comics auction house; every sale on CGC's list of the most expensive comics was a CGC-graded copy sold at auction or privately.

Whatever the route, compare at least two recent sold prices in the same grade before you set a price or accept an offer.

Lay the comic flat and shoot the front cover straight on in even daylight, then the back cover, the spine edge and the indicia. Keep glare off the cover, because gloss loss and color touch-ups are grading points. These four photos are also what a buyer or an auction house will ask for first.
