Marvel Comics Value: What Old Marvel Comics Are Worth

Marvel comics range from a few dollars to millions, and the gap is almost entirely about key status and grade. PriceCharting values retrieved September 25, 2026 show the spread: Magik #1 (1983) sells for $10.06 ungraded, The Amazing Spider-Man #300 (1988) for $162 in CGC 2.0, and Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962) for $22,000 in CGC 2.0 and $584,365 in 9.4. The top Marvel books on CGC's record list have sold for over $3 million.

These are top-grade copies. The same list shows Amazing Fantasy #15 at $540,000 in CGC 9.0 (2024) and Captain America Comics #1 at $750,000 in 9.2 (2024), so a lower grade cuts the price sharply even for the biggest keys.

Marvel Comics #1, cover-dated October 1939, was published by Timely, the company that became Atlas in 1950 and Marvel in the 1960s. It introduced Carl Burgos's Human Torch, Paul Gustavson's Angel and Bill Everett's Namor the Sub-Mariner. The first print of 80,000 copies sold out quickly, and a second printing cover-dated November 1939 sold about 800,000 (Wikipedia, Timely Comics).

PriceCharting's grade estimates for this book, such as $57,360 in 4.0, sit far below those real sales, because the book rarely sells. For Marvel Comics #1, use the auction records. Check for the November 1939 second printing too: it carries a different cover date.

On these books a 9.2 copy costs anywhere from about 12 to 68 times a 2.0 copy, so on Silver Age Marvel the grade decides most of the price.
