Dazzler First Appearance: X-Men #130 Value and Variants

Dazzler first appeared in The Uncanny X-Men #130, cover-dated February 1980, created by Tom DeFalco and John Romita Jr. (Wikipedia). She is Alison Blaire, a mutant singer who meets the X-Men in #130 and turns down their offer to join in #131. PriceCharting's listing adds that #130 is also the second appearance of Kitty Pryde and Emma Frost and features Sebastian Shaw, which is part of why it sells steadily.

The character began as a business deal: Wikipedia says Marvel conceived her in early 1979 as a joint venture with Casablanca Records, the disco label.

PriceCharting lists three separate editions of The X-Men #130, read on September 25, 2026:

Two things stand out. The raw average sits above the CGC 4.0 and 6.0 prices because it mixes copies of every condition, so it is not a price for any one grade. Her own series launched with Dazzler #1, released February 28, 1981 with a 50-cent cover price (GoCollect). Wikipedia says it was Marvel's first ongoing series sold only through the direct market, meaning comic shops rather than newsstands, and that about 400,000 copies went to stores, roughly double Marvel's best-selling titles of the time. GoCollect lists two variations of Dazzler #1. Because so many were printed, it is a historically important book rather than a scarce one.

She is stronger than her pop-star image suggests. Wikipedia describes her converting sound into light and energy: laser blasts, holograms and protective shields, a pulse of light on the order of several thousand watts, and the ability to stretch her output into damaging microwave energy. Wikipedia describes Dazzler as widely recognized as a gay icon, because of her disco look, pop-star stage persona and strong-willed characterization, and because her search for acceptance resonates with many LGBTQ+ readers. It does not state that the character herself is LGBTQ. Wikipedia names Northstar as the first openly gay character to come out in a Marvel comic. He first appeared in The Uncanny X-Men #120 (April 1979), said "I am gay" in Alpha Flight #106 (1992), and married Kyle Jinadu in Astonishing X-Men #51 (June 2012), which Wikipedia calls the first same-sex wedding shown in mainstream comics.

Halston Sage played Dazzler in the 2019 film Dark Phoenix, and she appears in the animated series X-Men '97 (Wikipedia). In the comics she became a citizen of Krakoa and has since gone back to her singing career.
